Sears Band, Orchestra and Choir students brought home a total of 72 medals at the Illinois Solo and Ensemble Contest.
Sears Band, Orchestra and Choir students brought home a total of 72 medals at the Illinois Solo and Ensemble Contest held on Saturday, Feb. 9 in Palatine.
Sears students earned the following for performing in solos and ensembles:
- 8 gold plus medals (perfect score)
- 54 gold medals (1st place)
- 10 silver medals (2nd place)
"Taking the time to learn a solo or ensemble to perform in front of an adjudicator shows dedication and courage," Band Director Ms. Lisa Lehman said. "The skills practiced while preparing their pieces have led to an enormous amount of musical growth for each student. Congratulations to all of our fabulous musicians."
Sears student performances were judged in the Northern District along with students from Winnetka, Wilmette, Glenview, Northbrook and surrounding villages on the North Shore.
The Illinois Solo and Ensemble Contest is held annually by the Illinois Grade School Music Association (IGSMA).
"(IGSMA participation) is important because it motivates learners to challenge themselves to do their best work and risk being evaluated and compared against a standard of excellence," Sears Orchestra Director Mrs. Gail Rodin said. "Students are not required to participate. Our Sears musicians wanted to participate and gave their best efforts. That itself is better than a gold medal."
