Code of Conduct

The Code of Conduct provides the framework of individual expectations for each student attending The Joseph Sears School. Each student is expected to practices these Cornerstone Behaviors with the support of teachers, parents and administrators.


1. Attend school and participate as expected.
  • Come to school and all classes on time.
  • Participate in an appropriate manner.
  • Use all technology appropriately.
2. Accept responsibility for your own learning.
  • Come to class with all homework completed.
  • Come to school with all necessary supplies.
3. Accept rules and respect authority.
  • Accept responsibility for behavior and consequences.
  • Report any violations of The Code of Conduct you see to an adult.
  • Follow directions.
  • Eat food in spaces designated for eating.
4. Be responsible for your safety and that of others.
  • Report unsafe situations to an adult immediately.
  • Do not engage in any behavior that endangers your safety and/or the safety of others.
  • Distractions to the learning environment are not allowed.
  • Mobile devices can not be used by students unless directed by a teacher during classroom hours. Devices are prohibited from use in locker rooms and/or restrooms at all times.
  • Students must not use or possess alcohol, tobacco, drugs, weapons, look-alike weapons, or flammable/explosive materials.
  • Improper use of prescription medication or substances intended for medical use is not allowed.


1. Be courteous, helpful and cooperative
  • Be inclusive in your school interactions.
  • Assist others whenever possible and appropriate.
  • If sharing is appropriate, share with those around you.
2. Support others with positive words and actions.
  • Encourage others to do their personal best.
  • Voice legitimate, descriptive praise for jobs well done.
  • Use words carefully and thoughtfully. Name calling, mocking or laughing maliciously at others is unacceptable.
  • Avoid negative nonverbal behavior such as pointing and laughing, rolling eyes or inappropriate written or online communications.
3. Accept both success and disappointment.
  • Practice good sportsmanship.
  • Be humble.
  • Control your temper.


1. Tell the truth.
  • Tell the whole truth with no omissions.
  • Do not deny others the right to tell the truth.
  • Do not deny guilt when guilty, by using phrases like "I was just kidding/joking," "I didn't see them," "But I didn't do anything" or "Can't you take a joke?"
  • When school personnel ask for your name, answer immediately and truthfully.
2. Do not steal.
  • Ask permission before borrowing.
  • Return borrowed materials on time and in the same condition they were in when you borrowed them.
  • All forms of stealing are prohibited.
3. Do not cheat.
  • Do not cheat on assignments, quizzes or tests.
  • Do not discuss quiz/test questions and/or answers with someone who has not taken the quiz/test.
  • Do not represent other students' work as your own.
  • Do not plagiarize.


1. Show respect for yourself.
  • Dress appropriately for all school related/sponsored functions. Student dress or appearance must conform to the dress code.
  • Students must not engage in inappropriate physical affection.
2. Show respect for fellow students.
  • Students must keep hands, feet and objects to themselves.
  • Student interactions with fellow students must reflect courtesy and civility.
  • Students must use appropriate language.
  • Students must have permission to use one another's possessions or go into another's locker/desk.
  • Physical, verbal and nonverbal abuse including fighting, harassment, bullying, threats or intimidation will not be tolerated in any form.
3. Show respect for all adults.
  • Student interactions with adults must reflect courtesy and civility.
  • Students must obey adult instructions and directions related to the school code of conduct.
  • Insubordination, verbal and nonverbal abuse and assault will not be tolerated in any form.
4. Show respect for school property.
  • Lockers and hallways must be maintained properly.
  • School equipment must be used appropriately.
  • Physical environment must not be defaced.
  • Destruction of school property and settling false emergency alarms are prohibited.
