Early Entrance and Acceleration/Delayed Entrance and Retention

Kenilworth District 38 provides an Accelerated Placement Program (APP). The APP advances our goal of providing educational programs with equitable opportunities for each student to develop their outstanding talents. Our APP provides an educational setting with curriculum options usually reserved for students who are older or in higher grades than the student participating in the APP.
APP options include, but may not be limited to: accelerating a student in a single subject; whole grade-level acceleration; and early entrance to kindergarten or first grade. Participation in the APP is open to all students who demonstrate high ability and who may benefit from accelerated placement. Importantly, prior to fourth grade, acceleration in single subject areas is offered in the form of enrichment designed to support student attainment of a deeper conceptual understanding within each unit of instruction. This acceleration supports mastery of foundational skill knowledge through students articulating their thinking, generating multiple solution strategies, considering different perspectives, and engaging in creative problem-solving.
Parents/guardians who wish to request a student evaluation for entrance into the Advanced Placement Program should contact the Principal prior to April 1 for the following school year. At that time, parents/guardians will be asked to complete a formal request for evaluation in writing. Upon receipt of the formal request, the student evaluation team, which includes the parent/guardian, current teacher(s), and the Principal, along with other pertinent team members, will consider the referral and make a determination regarding moving forward with the evaluation process. Should a child qualify for the APP, a transition plan will be developed by the team.
