Learning through an authentic farm-to-table experience
The Joseph Sears School Outdoor Classroom provides students with a hands-on opportunity to explore various stages of the agriculture growth cycle as they learn how to plant, cultivate, identify, cook (and eat!) fruits and vegetables grown in the Outdoor Garden. The Outdoor Classroom is maintained throughout the year by parent and community volunteers alongside The Organic Gardener.
The Outdoor Classroom is integrated into science curriculum units on biology and agriculture, so all students in grades K-8 have an opportunity to learn in the space. Students in grade 5-8 learn how to cook with many of the fruits and vegetables they have grown in the garden through their practical arts classes.
