Homework:

It is expected that students will read or be read to for at least 15 minutes daily. Literature may include a book, newspaper article, or a magazine article. Titles should be recorded on the Home Reading Log which should be turned in upon completion.  Students who turn in their reading log will receive a certificate. Your child will then receive another log to complete.  In addition, students are expected to study daily for their weekly spelling test. Math, occasional special projects, make-up work, or incomplete work may also be sent home. All spelling and math homework should be done in pencil. Please check your child’s yellow Take Home folder every night.  Please send any correspondence back to school in your child’s yellow folder.

Student Work:

Student work is put into mailboxes after it is corrected and discussed. Students often correct their work as we discuss it together. Some work, particularly writing, is kept at school.

Star of the Week:

This is a language arts display featuring one student each week. The featured student will have the opportunity to share information about their family, interests, hobbies, or memorable moments while developing reading, writing, and speaking skills. Students will receive a letter on Thursday in the Star Bag reminding them when to bring in their materials.

Mystery Reader:

Mystery Reader is a job that you need to sign up for at “Parent Orientation Night”. This is a time when we invite you or a special person in your family to read to the children first thing in the morning on Fridays. We would like you to bring two books from home. This will be a surprise to the children so please keep it a secret. Thank you for volunteering.

Parent Involvement:

Parents may choose to be involved in our classroom by assisting with a variety of activities.  Room parents will contact volunteers as needed.

Book Orders:

We will be ordering books from Scholastic.  If you choose to purchase books, please pay by check made out to “Scholastic”, regardless of how small the amount may be.

Make-up work:

Please arrange for a sibling, friend, or parent to pick up work missed due to an absence. All work should be done in pencil, unless specified, and returned in a timely fashion.

Birthday Treats/Snack:

We have 18 students in the class. Students will need to provide their own snack. Water bottles are permitted as long as the weather is warm.  Birthdays are usually celebrated with a special treat brought in by the birthday child. Summer birthdays will be celebrated towards the end of the school year. At the time of your child’s birthday I will send home a Birthday Bag.  Please fill out one of the sheets inside the birthday journal.  Your child will share his special day with the class when he returns the bag.  Snack is served around 9:40.

Library:

Students will go to the library once a week. Books are due every two weeks. A maximum of four books may be checked out at a time.

Rules:

Students are encouraged to get along with others, take responsibility for their own actions, and build respect for classmates and the classroom. The four cornerstone values articulated in the Code of Conduct will be reinforced in the classroom. There are classroom rewards for making good choices.

Lunch/After School Plan:

Please review with your child the prearranged plan for going to a friend’s house either for lunch or after school.  If your child will be picked up by a person other than his/her parent, please be sure your child is clear about the pick up procedures.  Please place a note indicating any change in procedure in the yellow Take Home folder.

I am looking forward to a year of tremendous growth and exciting days ahead with each child in my class.
